Here’s the best Christmas video (and Youtube viewers agree)

Since few weeks, our TVs are invaded by Christmas-related videos. While most of these are basic commercials simply adding Santa Claus to their usual argumentation, some others can on the contrary be really heartwarming. (And be honest, we all need this after such a year!). “English for Beginners” is a Polish Christmas ad for the e-commerce website Allegro, which belongs to the latter category. Almost three million Youtube users have already been moved by this lovely grandfather.

The video follows the hard journey of the elderly man learning English thanks to his dog and an audio set ordered online. Slowly but surely, he becomes fluent by putting stickers in his whole house’s furniture and repeating phrases out loud. (Useful tips if one of your resolutions for 2017 is to learn a new language by the way!). He takes opportunity of every little moment to improve his English, putting him in funny situations – such as saying “I love You” to a surprised woman sitting in front of him in the bus.  Little by little, we understand what his mission is. At the end, he receives a new parcel from Allegro, containing a suitcase. Destination: London, to meet his granddaughter for the first time. As the little girl appears, he walks toward her saying “Hi, I am your grandfather”. (And then, we all cried! We know you did 😉 ) . Ultimately, the search bar asks you “And you? What are you looking for?”.

A spokesperson for Allegro told BuzzFeed: “For years, we’ve strived to make both Allegro – the largest e-commerce platform in the CEE region – as well as our communication to customers bring joy, touch the heart and cause a mile. Such is this ad: about a grandfather who overcomes obstacles to reunite with his loved ones living abroad. Many Polish people share the same experience. Nearly one million Poles have decided to leave the country in search for a job, mainly heading the United Kingdom. Despite the relatively close distance between the countries, family ties tend to weaken. Therefore, Christmas for many is a difficult time in which we yearn for more.  But the story we are telling is all-purpose and can be easily understood by any other nation or community who can easily link the happy ending of a smile and tears of emotion to their daily human experience.”

In a nutshell, this lovely video will leave you with hope and sweet feelings in your heart, and the music notes of “Silent night” in your head.
